Quaeris survey on Christmas holidays 2025 reveals that Italians and Christmas 2025 are sharply divided: 52.4% chose to stay at home, faithful to the longstanding tradition of lunch with relatives and presents under the tree. However, a far from negligible minority emerges: 33.3% who will definitely travel, plus a further 9.5% still undecided, waiting until the last moment to assess based on weather and/or last-minute offers.
Amongst chosen destinations, the mountains prevail with 54.5%, confirming themselves as the essence of Italian Christmas. But there’s a surprising finding: 36.4% choose sea and warm destinations—nearly 4 out of 10 amongst those travelling. It’s the anti-tradition that works, the escape from the cold, the desire for a different Christmas.
Art cities attract 18.2% thanks to Christmas markets, exhibitions, and cultural events that transform Italian cities into unique festive stages. Europe and international destinations remain niche at 9.1%. Duration confirms a precise trend: Italians prefer high-impact micro-holidays. 44.4% choose four to five days, with the possibility of combining Christmas and New Year. 33.3% opt for two to three days, often due to work constraints or limited budgets but with a strong desire for a break, however brief. Only 22.2% allow themselves the entire week.
Regarding bookings: Booking.com leads with 33.3%, followed by airline and railway company websites which gather 25%. But the most surprising figure is the 25% who don’t book at all, choosing second homes in the mountains or by the sea, stays with relatives, hospitality exchanges through informal networks, or last-minute decisions.
The sample analysed shows gender balance but above all concentration in the 35-54 age bracket, representing 60% of the total. Employees predominate with 61.1%, followed by a significant 33.3% of self-employed individuals representing the fabric of Italian SMEs and professionals. Geographically, the North-East leads with 47.1%, the North-West with 11.8%, followed by Central Italy with 35.3%, whilst the South is underrepresented at 5.9%.
From Quaeris s.r.l.’s Christmas survey, Christmas 2025 captures a country where tradition and innovation coexist. The longstanding tradition of lunch with relatives and presents under the tree prevails, but for those choosing to escape elsewhere, the mountains maintain their primacy, whilst the choice of sea and warm destinations represents a growing trend.
